Coffee needs to mingle with hot water for a certain length of time to extract all the flavors in the grounds. When you brew half a pot (6 cups) a portion of the coffee flavor remains in the grounds un-extracted.
I have experimented for quite awhile to see if I could overcome this design limitation. This video illustrates the process I use increase the contact time of the coffee and water. It is helpful to have a coffee maker with the “drip stop” feature allowing you to remove the carafe while the filter basket contains liquid.

It must be the water here. I hate coffee makers. I have never really found a good one. They always have a problem and just don’t last for me. I think I’ll stick with cheap and simple for a while.
